About Porphyry Stone Pavers

Porphyry pavers are beautiful, durable, slip resistant, require little on-going maintenance and can last for millennia at a time.

The word “porphyry” is used to describe an igneous rock that consists of large-grained crystals, like quartz and feldspar, which are spread within a fine-grained silicate based groundmass. The word itself comes from the Greek term “porphyra” which means purple. In the Ancient Greek, Babylonian and Roman era, purple was considered a colour of royalty and subsequently, porphyry stones were used to create many statues, monuments and building structures like palaces and roads. Some of these stand to this day! The others didn’t vanish because of damage to the stone but because others valued it so much, that they stole it!

Porphyry pavers have a high compression breaking point, can withstand high temperature changes and are resistant to chemicals. So if you are looking for a durable paver that will stand the test of time for heavy traffic areas like footpaths and driveways, porphyry pavers are an ideal solution!

As the stone is formed from magma, it comes in a variety of colours. The rich, but gentle, combination of purple, warm grey and orange tones of Porphyry pavers means that they don’t stain as easily, which allows for easier maintenance and upkeep. If you have a busy lifestyle and want a beautiful natural paver, without the time consuming upkeep that many natural pavers demand, porphyry pavers may be perfect for your project and home.

These pavers are a complimentary addition to driveways, pathways, garden patios and indoor flooring in Californian Bungalow, Federation and Victorian style homes.

Like most natural stones, Porphyry pavers are available in a variety of finishes including split and sawn. Split sided Porphyry pavers, with their rough and organic look, are most suitable for gardens where they add another texture and aesthetic to the backyard. On the other hand, the smooth sawn sided Porphyry pavers are better suited for foot traffic and are ideal for installation at town centres and market places.

It’s not difficult to see why porphyry stones were, and still are, so valued! Available in a variety of styles and colours, you are sure to find a porphyry stone that will match your home’s design and decor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are porphyry pavers?

Porphyry pavers are natural stone pavers whose structure is made of large-grained crystals from volcanic minerals such as quartz and feldspar. Porphyry is formed from magma and as such, it comes in a variety of colours. As a paver, it has a regal beauty but also other excellent qualities such as durability, slip-resistance, requires minimum on-going maintenance and will stand the test of time.

Why porphyry pavers?

Porphyry pavers are a strong and durable natural paver, often used to add a European touch to driveways and other outdoor areas. Available as a paver or a high-quality cobblestone, either option acts as both a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing driveway paver. If you’re after a non-slip, weather-resistant option for high traffic areas, porphyry is worth your consideration.

How to grout porphyry pavers?

Grouting porphyry pavers is a fairly simple process that you can do yourself. However, as with most natural stone pavers, we do recommend seeking professional help to ease the process. If you are to do this yourself, first, dampen the grout joints and stones with a sponge. Then pour a high-grade grouting compound into the joints, ensuring no voids. Finally, remove any excess from the grout joints, sponge clean the joints and stone with water to remove excess grout and clean the pavers one last time. And voila! The grouting is complete.

How to clean porphyry pavers?

Once again, we recommend seeking professional cleaning services, however if you want to clean your porphyry pavers yourself, this can be easily achieved with the right tools and process. First, sweep excess dirt from the stone’s surface and then apply a pH neutral cleaner (don’t use acidic products) onto manageable sections. Next, use a stiff broom to bring up the grime and then remove it with any wet-vac product. And voila! Your Porphyry Pavers will look as good as new!
