Natural Stone Crazy Paving or Crazy Pavers
If you’re an abstract lover, crazy about asymmetry and absolutely detest the structure of straight and neat lines (even pavers), then crazy paving was designed especially for your outdoor area!
Crazy pavers (also known as random pavers) are very much like they sound: a collection of natural stones in mixed shapes and sizes, arranged in a ‘crazy’ manner. As a flexible material, crazy paving allows you to create your own patterns and designs, providing depth and variety to any area.
What makes crazy pavers so popular is the ability to combine large pieces and smaller pieces of natural stone and quite literally create a unique paving design depending how you choose to lay them. The irregular shapes will help you create a natural and dynamic one-of-a-kind look. Of all the natural stone pavers, this style is the most practical for curved garden areas.
Crazy paving can be used for all your outdoor paving requirements, from garden paths and walkways to patios, courtyards and driveways. You can also spruce up any plain wall structure with our crazy wall cladding. We suggest using a natural stone style whereby the random stone pavers will complement your current home and garden design.
At Armstone, we supply most of our crazy paving stones as loose pieces in varying sizes. We stock a whole range of crazy paving in our Glebe showroom in Sydney. Our range includes: crazy paving bluestone, crazy paving sandstone and crazy paving porphyry. If your project requires smaller stones or a specific shape or size to complete your design, you can shape the stone to your liking by chipping it down. This flexibility is the true beauty of choosing crazy pavers.
Another variety of crazy paving stones available at Armstone are shaped pieces already glued to a mesh backing. They are designed in such a way that each tile interlocks with the other to create a seamless finish. Since you don’t need to cut the pieces and jigsaw puzzle them individually, this solution of crazy paving saves on installation costs and speeds up the process.
At Armstone, our collection of random pavers includes Pianura Bluestone with a smooth anti-slip finish, Sandstone Pavers with a sawn finish, Quartz Crazy Pavers with a natural split finish and Italian Porphyry Crazy Pavers.
Use this gallery to inspire your next crazy stone paving project. As no two stones are the same, your crazy paving design will become something that is completely unique to you.

What is crazy stone paving?
Crazy stone paving is the name given to a form of paving where different sized pieces of flat stones are laid in an almost mosaic-like structure. Although the style originated in ancient Rome, the irregular patterns and shapes of stones inspired its irregular naming. This method is used for hard landscaping of pathways, patios, gardens, driveways, poolsides, and many other surfaces.
How to lay crazy paving?
Due to the nature of crazy paving, there isn’t a single conventional way of laying the stones. As such, installing crazy paving really depends on whether you want to lay it on a soft surface (such as gravel), a hard surface (such as compacted road base), or even concrete. The most common method, however, involves spreading road base or hardcore stones that range from 40-80mm in thickness, followed by spreading a strip drain, and finally laying the paving onto mortar that has a 3:1 sand to cement ratio. Use a spirit level to ensure that the paving slopes away from the house and clean it afterwards with mild soap and water.
How much does crazy paving cost?
Crazy stone pavers are made from typical natural stone pavers that have been broken down into smaller, irregular shaped stones. Depending on the type of stone you choose, they cost between $60 and $100 per meter squared. However, the overall cost will vary depending on the surface area that you will be paving and the preparation of that area. How do you fill gaps in crazy paving?
Once you have installed and laid down the crazy pavers, allow 24 hours for them to settle. Fill the gaps with a ready-made sanded grout with added polymer in it. We recommend adding a grout booster to the sanded grout to make it even more flexible and avoid any shrinkage.
Why crazy paving?
The irregular and abstract patterns that can be formed with crazy paving, gives an area a uniquely timeless and retro appeal. This paving style works very well in modern areas and its versatility makes it perfect for all kinds of outdoor spaces including garden paths, driveways, decks, poolsides, and many others.
